Students and pupils from across the borough have joined forces to tidy the streets of Darlington, as part of the Big Spring Clean.
Pupils at Reid Street School cleared litter in their area on Friday, March 3rd, 2017, while Mowden Junior School pupils will be litter picking around Mowden shops on Tuesday, April 4th, 2017.
On Thursday, April 6th, 2017, Mowden Infants School pupils will clean up the area around Bushel Hill, and students from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College will be picking up litter in Stanhope Park.
Darlington College also has plans for litter picks at Beech Wood, Rockwell, South Park and Eastmount Road every week starting from Wednesday, March 15th, 2017.
In addition to litter picking, students will also be cutting back vegetation, removing self-seeded saplings and painting play equipment.
Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and the local environment, said: “It’s fantastic that the staff, pupils and students are doing their bit for our streets and we’d love to see more schools and community groups taking part in litter picks.
“The Big Spring Clean is already proving popular but litter is a year-round problem and we need more people willing to pledge to help our streets and work together to keep them clean.”
Wallis continued: “Obviously the best thing would be for people not to drop litter – put it in a bin or take it home – but we’d also like to call on people to take positive action if they do see it by picking it up.
“If everyone picked up just one piece of litter every day, think of the difference it would make!”
Councillor Gerald Lee, chair of LitterFree Durham, added: “The efforts of the many volunteers, of all ages, who take part in our annual Big Spring Clean, really make a difference in tidying up our towns and villages.
“We’d love to see more schools and colleges taking part and make litter a part of their curriculum teaching youngsters to look after their local environment.”
The annual Big Spring Clean runs until Sunday, April 16th, 2017.
